The Board met for the Final Budget Hearing and Regular Meeting on Thursday, September 7, 2023.  Notice of the meeting was published in the Thursday, August 24, 2023 edition of The Eagle. An affidavit of publication is available in the Board Office.

Chairman Susin invited Gabriela Regalado, a 6th grade student from Freedom 7 Elementary School to lead  the pledge of allegiance.

Chairman Susin introduced tonight's entertainment. Freedom 7 Elementary School Strings and Piano/Keyboard students, directed by Ms. Haag and Ms. Waters. The Board thanked the teachers, students, and Ms. Lott, Principal of Freedom 7 Elementary School, for thier performance.

 

Chairman Susin invited Ava Kirven, a 2nd grade student at Freedom 7 Elementary School, to the podium for an interview.

Board Members and Dr. Rendell recognized various students, staff, community members and business partners and outlined the positive impact each has on Brevard Public Schools.

  • Ms. Campbell recognized Jennifer Ginwright and read an email from a parent expressing her gratitude for her daughter's bus driver and the positive impact she has on the students.
  • Rachel Rutledge recognized Bill McInnish, an Eau Gallie School teacher, who was presented a check from Senator Mayfield and Representative Sirois for a new plane.
  • A check was also presented to Cocoa Beach Jr/Sr High School for an Aqua Science Academy, which Representative Sirois championed.  
  • The Board thanked Senator Mayfield and Representative Sirois for all their support for Brevard Public Schools and the CTE programs.

After the Board voted to approve the administrative recommendations, Dr. Rendell recognized administrators who were in attendance.

  • The reclassification/transfer of Jonathan J. Bolitho from the position of Teacher at Quest Elementary School to the position of Assistant Principal (10 month) at Roosevelt Elementary School, on annual contract, effective September 8, 2023.

 

  • The reclassification/transfer of Larry Wayne Lawrence II from the position of Teacher at Cocoa High School to the position of Interim Assistant Principal (10 month) at Cocoa High School, on annual contract, effective September 8, 2023.

Ms. Lesinski presented to the Board a PowerPoint on the Proposed Millage and Final Budget for the 2023-2024 School Year.  The Board was given the opportunity to ask questions during this presentation.

  1. The revenue impact of School Choices?
  2. The breakdown of the allocated amount for classroom technology and can we increase that amount?

Chairman Susin read the National Suicide Prevention Proclamation from the podium. Leadership from the Space Coast Health Foundation addressed the Board on the suicide statistical rates. She also spoke about an initiative that BPS is collaborating with them on called "Thrive Within".

 

October is also National Dyslexia Awareness Month.

The Board and Dr. Rendell each discussed their concerns on various issues.   


 

Ms. Campbell recommended, at the next Work Session on September 12, 2023, the Board have a discussion on House Bill 1069.  She referenced State Law and FCC guidelines. 


 

Ms. Jenkins made recommendations on the Viera High School hazing incident.

  • recommended to suspend the football program until all investigations were completed, that Mrs. Wright concurred.
