2019-20 Comprehensive Fire Safety, Casualty Safety and Sanitation Inspection
Meeting Date(s)
Consent Type

Certified Fire Safety Inspectors of the Brevard Public Schools (BPS) Office of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) performed an unannounced annual inspection of each educational facility in the District.  Deficiencies noted at each site are re-inspected.

BPS uses the following Statues, Administrative Codes and Industry Standards to establish a process for conducting annual comprehensive fire safety, casualty safety, and sanitation inspection of each existing BPS facility:

*  Florida Statute 1013.12 - Casualty, Sanitation, and Fire Safety Standards and Inspection of Property

*  Florida Administrative Code 69A-58 -Fire Safety in Educational Facilities

* National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Fire Prevention Code 1 and Fife Safety Code 101.

Local/municipal fire officials were invited to assist our trained/certified fire safety inspectors during the fire safety portion of the inspection process for all school and ancillary sites.  Where the local fire department declined to participate in an inspection, a copy of the completed inspection report was provided to them.  The Principal for each school as well as a BPS Fire/Safety Inspector signed the original copy of each school's inspection report.  An electronic copy of the report is attached.

Although BPS has agreed to assist local charter schools each year in this process, the District is not responsible for managing the safety deficiencies identified.  The correction of these deficiencies is the responsibility of the individual charter school.  A separate file containing each charter school inspection report was provided to the Director of Open Enrollment, Charter and District Title IX Coordinator for reference.  A copy of this report is attached.

A copy of the fire safety portion of the BPS reports as well as the charter school reports were submitted to the State Fire Marshal's Office on July 30, 2020 as required by FAC 69A-58.

The EH&S Department routinely works directly with the Facilities Maintenance Department and the Facilities Planning/Projects Department to prioritize repair and modifications of discovered safety deficiencies.
