Palm Bay Magnet High School's Speech and Debate Team has one student member who has earned the opportunity to compete at the prestigious Yale Invitational debate Tournament in New Haven, CT, and the Duke University Invitational Speech & Debate Tournament in Durham, NC. The school is requesting approval for this one student accompanied by her parent/BPS employee, to travel to New Haven, Connecticut on September 29-October 3, 2022, to participate in the Yale Debate Association Thirtieth Annual Yale Invitational Tournament at Yale University, then to the Duke University Invitational Speech & Debate Tournament on October 7-9, 2022, in Durham, NC. If the student qualifies to advance to the next level, then she will travel to the Annual Tournament of Champions to be held in Kentucky in June 2023.  This student will miss two school days, September 30th & October 7th 2022. Travel to New Haven, CT, will be by private vehicle to Orlando International Airport on Thursday, Sept. 29th, then travel by commercial airline to New Haven, CT. Upon arrival they will be transported via airport shuttle to their accommodations at the New Haven Village Suites, 3 Long Wharf Drive, New Haven, CT 06511.  Return will be on Sunday, October 3rd.  Trip cost is approximately $1,834.10. Parent is assuming funding of this and additional trips.  Cost includes transportation, lodging, and tournament fees. THERE IS NO COST TO THE DISTRICT.  Letter of Invitation and tournament schedule for the Yale Invitational is attached.  Additional travel accommodations will be booked upon qualification for each tournament. 

Recommendation

Approve the request of Palm Bay Magnet High School Speech and Debate Team's one qualified student member accompanied by her parent/BPS employee, to travel to New Haven, Connecticut on September 29-October 3, 2022, to participate in the prestigious Yale Debate Association Thirtieth Annual Yale Invitational Tournament at Yale University, and to the Duke University Invitational Speech & Debate Tournament in Durham, NC on October 7-9, 2022. In addition, if qualified to the next level, she will travel to participate in the Annual Tournament of Champions to be held June 2023 in Kentucky.
