Chairman Susin presented the Board with a question, then gave each member an opportunity to speak.

  • do you or do you not believe in separating the public comment into agenda/non-agenda.

or

  • do not broadcast the non-agenda item public comments, record and post after the meeting.

Chairman Susin requested that he receive a list of the challenged books so that he can read them to be better informed.

Ms. Campbell stated:

  • her strong beliefs in not broadcasting live the reading of certain types of books to protect the children at home.
  • during the July 22, 2023 Board meeting, 3 women read out loud from books that contained sexual content at which time the chairman stopped the reading, and because of this the books were pulled from shelves.
  • she recommended when a person comes in for public comment they write on the form what they wish to comment on.  If it is to read, they list the book so that we verify if it has been challenged and if so they are allowed to read it during public comment.

Ms. Jenkins stated:

  • first, she would like to leave it alone, and second, if someone is abusing the public comment time she recommended at that time the Board have a discussion on possibly seperating the public comment to agenda/non-agenda, recording that and broadcasting after the meeting.
  • requested that the Board should receive an email when a book has been pulled because of the policy.
  • requested that the list of challenged books be accessible to the public on the BPS website.  The link: https://sites.google.com/a/share.brevardschools.org/librarymedia/home
