Discussion Due to emergency school closures on September 28, 29, 30 caused by Hurricane Ian, the 2022-2023 school calendar must be amended. In order to meet instructional minute requirements set for by F.S. 1003.436, additional instructional minutes must be captured for first semester. This will be accomplished by extending first semester by two additional days after winter break. The third instructional day, which was lost due to Hurricane Ian, will be captured by converting four early release Fridays to regular school days. The additional minutes gained by converting these four early release Fridays along with extending first semester two days after winter break will meet course credit requirements. Second semester would then be 89 school days in length which would allow for the required instructional minutes during second semester. This amendment to the school calendar would allow Brevard Public Schools to make up the missed instructional time during first semester without utilizing hurricane make up days within the week of Thanksgiving.
Recommendation Recommend that the School Board approve the amended 2022-2023 school calendar.
