The School Board has previously approved two owner-directed change orders to the contract for the Gardendale Alternative Learning Center facility renewal project to support bringing the special day school services previously provided by a contracted vendor back to a District facility. As the facility has been operational, the frequency of eloping students created a safety concern. The proposed solution balances the safety of potentially eloping students and the need for egress during a fire. The proposed door control systems are not immediately responsive to students independently exiting the classroom; however, in order to implement these systems, smoke detectors and fire alarm connections are also required which disable the devices in the event of a fire. This solution has been thoroughly vetted through the District's Building Official and Fire Marshal. 

Wharton-Smith, Inc. has submitted an owner-directed change order #3 for implementing the door control systems and fire safety system modifications to Building 67 in the amount of $107,453. Administration and permitting costs were previously budgeted. 

The project is included in the proposed FY 23 capital program. 

Board approval is required for purchase orders over $50,000. The standard agreement template has been used which does not require legal review. 

Approve the owner-directed change order #3 submitted by Wharton, Smith, Inc. in an amount not to exceed $107,453 under their continuing contract for construction management services for the power and technology upgrades required at Gardendale Alternative Learning Center to support the special day school program.
