Discussion

This recommendation from the Office of Secondary Leading & Learning and the School Health Advisory Committee (SHAC) is the result of a review of previously adopted instructional materials and curriculum guides including input from teachers, administrators, district staff, parents and community members.  After an extensive review of the materials, the Office of Secondary Leading & Learning and the SHAC recommends that the Board approve the instructional materials relating to reproductive health and disease education to ensure all classrooms have high quality, standards-aligned curriculum to support strong Health Education instruction.

The materials listed align with Florida’s Next Generation Sunshine State Standards for Health Education. In order to ensure a transparent process, materials and associated documents were explicitly reviewed at the first quarter SHAC meeting on September 7, 2022, from 3:00-5:00 PM in the ESF Board Room. The details of the SHAC meeting were available to the public and posted on the district main webpage. Additionally, parents and community members have opportunities to review district curriculum guides via a specially developed website. There are no costs associated with this item.

This item is required as a result of amendments to F.S 1003.42 (b) All instructional materials, as defined in s. 55 1006.29 (2), used to teach reproductive health or any disease, including HIV/AIDS, its symptoms, development, and treatment, as part of the courses referenced in subsection (3), must be annually approved by a district school board in an open, noticed public meeting.
