The Department of Career and Technical Education is submitting a grant application for federal funds from the Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21^st Century Act, Perkins V.  The total amount of the grant application is based on entitlement funding.  Brevard’s allocation in contingent upon Florida’s 2020 Federal Award.  To expedite the receipt of these entitlement funds, the application will be signed by the Superintendent and submitted electronically to the Office of Grants Management in the established Department Grants Management SHAREFILE.  The purpose of the grant is to develop more fully the academic and career and technical skills of secondary education students who elect to enroll in career and technical education programs.  In this federal legislation, the major focus for secondary education involves: (1) Ensure equal access for all individuals to educational opportunities that meet the workforce development needs of local communities and the state; (2) Ensure all programs align with the technical and employability requirements of Florida’s employers; (3) Recruit, support and retain qualified teachers, counselors and administrators to foster the highest level of student achievement; (4) Provide students with seamless career pathways by offering programs of study which result in credentials of value; (5) Engage industry partners to drive program innovation and work-based learning opportunities; (6) Provide comprehensive, career-focused counseling that allows students to make informed choices about their future.  To meet grant requirements, funds will be primarily used to support the following areas: (1) Salary and fringe for two existing resource teachers, one intern facilitator in the Office of Career and Technical Education; (2) staff development for educators to include industry certification, program improvement, teacher internships, and other areas as appropriate; (3) travel funds for CTE teachers to accompany eligible CTSO students to national competition; and (4) capital outlay funds to replace or upgrade equipment, software, and furniture as needed by high school CTE programs.  The Florida Department of Education establishes Perkins V state performance measures with identified local performance targets.  This grant applications incudes salary and fringe for two existing resource teachers and one intern facilitator.  The district is under no obligation to sustain these positions beyond the grant budget period.  A copy of the 2020-21 Perkins grant application will be available in the Office of Career & Technical Education.
