Brevard ASD Add On Program
Information - 11/17/2020
Consent after Information - 12/15/2020
In support of Brevard Public Schools, the Office of Professional Learning and Development, in collaboration with FDLRS East and the Office of Student Services, will offer teachers with a bachelor’s degree in exceptional student education a three course program approved by the Florida Department of Education to enable successful completers to obtain an add on endorsement in Autism Spectrum Disorder. The current approval period is July 2020-June 2025. Mike Alba and his staff will manage the program in partnership with the Office of Student Services and FDLRS East and will offer all three courses virtually at no cost to BPS instructional employees who meet the criteria for enrollment. The program is comprised of three 80 hour courses; Nature and Needs, Assessment, and Diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorders with Field Experience, Applied Behavior Analysis and Positive Behavior Supports for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders with Field Experience, and Augmentative/Alternative Communication Systems and Assistive/Instructional Technology for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders with Field Experience. We would like to offer this initial program to support exceptional student education teachers working with students with autism spectrum disorders and to ensure our teachers remain in certification compliance with state requirements for teachers serving 100% of their students through ASD instruction. Having reviewed and consulted with the Florida Department of Education for submission requirements, we would like to adopt the program for the period of July 2020-June 2025. The program, including the Professional Learning Catalog Components, are attached.
