| Discussion The Florida Building Code requires the "New educational facilities for school boards and Florida college boards, unless specifically exempted by the board with the written concurrence of the applicable local emergency management agency or the Florida Division of Emergency Management (DEM), shall have appropriate areas designed as enhanced hurricane protection areas (EHPAs)..." Based on coordination with Brevard County Emergency Management, the new classroom addition at West Melbourne Elementary School for Science will not be needed as a hurricane shelter. This has been coordinated with Brevard County Emergency Management and the District's Building Official. A confirmation letter from Brevard County Emergency Management is attached. Board action is required to exempt the classroom addition at West Melbourne Elementary School for Science from compliance with EHPA design standards in the Florida Building Code because it will not be used as a hurricane shelter. . | ||||||||||||||||||
