Board members reviewed the questionnaires provided them by Florida School Boards Association (FSBA) during Master Board Training called Culture Indicators and Communication Questions to Consider.

5. Post Meeting Evaluation

Board members discussed a Board evaluation tool that had been previously provided.  Board members concluded that it is not necessary or productive to do the evaluation after every meeting.  They will review during Board Check-Ins throughout the year.

6. Board Budget

Board members discussed their Board budget for 2021-2022.  A request will be forwarded to budgeting to request any funds left from the 2020-2021 school year be placed in a project for Board members to utilize for Certified Board Member training.

7. Community Mapping

Chairman Belford asked for Board members to utilize the site in Smartsheet to log organizations inside his or her district in order to map groups that the District or individual districts may use to align resources in relation to specific goals schools may have and possibly create and build capacity to support more comprehensive community systems to serve Brevard's youth.

Community Mapping can help by:

  • Identifying new resources
  • Insure all youth have access to the resources they need
  • Avoid duplicating services and resources
  • Provide information across agencies
  • Encourage collaboration

Chairman Belford asked for Board members to complete the mapping of their individual districts by May 28, 2021.

8. Review of Board Goals

Board members briefly discussed the annual objectives they established as part of their Board evaluation process.  Board members discussed visiting each of the schools in his or her district at least once during the year.  They feel it will be valuable to also visit at least two or three schools outside of their respective districts.

9. Community Hot Topics

The main focus during this discussion was the opening of school in August, 2021 as it relates to COVID-19 and what mitigation strategies will be necessary. Members concluded to invite local health care professionals back for a discussion on the best way to insure "brick and mortar" instruction when students return for the 2021-2022 school year.  A work session for the purpose of meeting with  health care experts regarding mitigation strategies for the new school year will be held at 2:00 p.m. on June 8, 2021. Board members are to send questions they want answered in advance of the meeting.  Ms. Escobar will compile and send to the invitees.

Mr. Susin suggested holding the required annual ethics training in conjunction with local elected leaders.  Dr. Mullins suggested that it be held in the Board room.  Ms. Escobar will reach out to Space Coast League of Cities to inquire about the possibility of holding it sometime in October.
