40. Discussion - Letter Asking Governor DeSantis to Veto Transgender Youth Sports Ban (Jenkins)

Board member Jenkins asked if the Board would consider writing a letter to Governor DeSantis asking him to veto SB 1028; part of which is a ban on trans sports.  Three of the five Board members stated they did not support writing the letter as a Board.  Board members Jenkins and McDougall will write one on their own and send to the Governor.

41. Discussion - Competitive Cheer (Susin)

Board member Susin was advocating for Brevard to add "competitive cheer" to Brevard Public Schools.  He said that it will provide more opportunities to students for scholarships. Chris Moore, Assistant Superintendent of Student Services, told the Board that FHSAA said the deadline for them to consider it being added for the 2021-2022 school year was actually May 25, 2021 so there was not time.  She said that the 2022-2023 school year can be a possibility.

Chairman Belford concluded that it seems like the team is working on it and will bring back fully vetted information  to the Board to make sure everyone is on the right page. Mr. Susin stated that he was going to contact FHSAA to see if Brevard can be granted an extension.

42. Board Member Reports
43. Board Member Discussion

Board member McDougall explained that she was offended by public speakers' comments that compared the mask mandate to that of events that occured in Nazi Germany. She said there was no comparision between masks meant to protect students, teachers and community members and the atrocities that had been inflicted on the Jewish people..
