March 9, 2021 Board Workshop (Charter School Applicants, Legal Services Update and YouthTruth Survey Results)

Pursuant to School Board Policy 8420.02, the School Board REQUIRES ALL VISITORS TO WEAR A FACE COVERING OF THE NOSE AND MOUTH AT ALL TIMES while on school board property when attendees cannot maintain social distancing. This is inclusive of attendance at School Board meetings/workshops. 


The School Board of Brevard County met for a Board Workshop on Tuesday, March 9, 2021.  Notice of the meeting was advertised in the Thursday, February 25, 2021 edition of The Eagle.  An affidavit of publication is available in the Board office.

4. Charter School Applicants

Jane Cline, Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Leading and Learning introduced Ron Goss, Board Chair of Florida High School for Accelerated Learning, who was making application for the  charter school, Florida High School for Accelerated Learning.   


The school offers an accelerated learning model that has four essential components that encompass the following key elements: a) fleible daily schedule; b) indvidual success plans; c) instructional delivery through blended learning; and d) support services.  Stanley Brizz, Board Vice-Chair and Judy Blanchard, Board Secretary/Treasurer, also provided information.  Mr. Goss  explained why they contracted with ALS Education, LL.as its ESP. 


Questions and discussion from Board members ensued.

Paul Gibbs, General Counsel, provided an update on Legal Services.  

6. Youth Truth Survey Results

Dr. Stephanie Soliven, Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Leading and Learning, led the presentation. She provided an overview of findings broken down by Elementary, Middle and High, how to manage the YouthTruth website and then on overview using and honoring the data. Dr. Soliven went over elementary first.


Ms. Campbell asked if the national comparison data was from this year and it was confirmed that yes, it is from this year. 


Ms. Jenkins asked about the possibility of transitioning 6th grade to middle school.  Dr. Soliven said that Brevard's 6th grade students perform remarkably well, so there is no discussion at this time. 


Dr. Soliven moved on to middle school followed by high school. Varying questions and comments ensued surrounding strategies and best practices in utilization of the information found in the survey.  


Dr. Soliven explained how to navigate the YouthTruth Survey tool and ways the data is used.


Ms. Belford commented that she is super excited; not only for  the data they have, but with the process they have in place to make sure we are owning that data.


Ms. Jenkins suggested a supplement for those teachers who implement the program "Sources of Strength."
