Discussion

The Environmental Health & Safety Department inspected these storage portables and found their condition to be beyond economical repair; therefore, demolition of these storage portables is recommended:

  • N124 located at Melbourne High School,
  • N078 located at Johnson Middle School,
  • N028 located at West Shore Jr./Sr. High School.

Storage portables at Lewis Carroll and Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High School are also being considered for DCR and demolition following inspection and evaluation of the cost of repair.

Demolition will be handled by Plant Operations & Maintenance. The estimated cost per unit for disposal at the land fill is approximately $1,500.

In addition, Hoover Middle School's campus includes one dilapidated wooden shed located near the tennis courts which is not used by the school. Facilities Services and the Hoover Middle School Administration agree that it is in the best interest of the school to remove the shed. Track and tennis court renewal projects are currently under design, so the shed should be removed prior to any renewal work on the track or tennis courts.

The shed is not included in the Florida Inventory of School Houses (FISH) data base for Brevard Public Schools.

The Plant Operations and Maintenance Team has the capacity to remove the wooden shed.

The FY 23 Capital Plan includes funding for refurbishment of portables, so they remain usable as classrooms and do not detract from the campus aesthetics. Portables that are beyond economical repair will be proposed for demolition.
