Program for Add-On Endorsement in Reading Status Report
Request for Action:
The enclosed Add-On Certification Program is submitted for DOE approval from July 1, 2020 - June 30, 2025. The Brevard County School Board approved our plan last year on February 12, 2019, however the state of Florida froze the reading plans to allow districts to revise their programs based on statute changes and format changes to the reading matrix. The DOE required districts to have their revised plans submitted to Just Read Florida for approval by April 1, 2020. In previous years, the plan would go before the Board prior to approval, however this year they wanted the plans to be submitted and reviewed prior to Board approval to ensure the plan was meeting state reading standards and revisions before bringing before the School Board. Our revised reading plan was submitted and approved by Just Read Florida and the Bureau of Educator Recruitment, Development and Retention on May 4, 2020.
Please review this program and grant approval for the period of July 1, 2020-June 30, 2025.
The need for Reading Endorsement will be increasing significantly based on HB 7055 requiring teachers delivering intensive reading intervention to be certified or endorsed in reading starting in the 2020-2021 school year. This includes teachers serving retained third grade students and those working with students through our summer reading programs.
Instructional Design / Delivery:
Teachers who wish to add the Reading endorsement to their Florida Educators’ Certificates must successfully complete five 60-hour courses (total 300 hours), which fulfill the content coursework for the program offered under auspices of the Brevard County Professional Learning Catalog (or completed through equivalent credit as specified in the Add-On Program):
Teachers may also choose to take the Subject Area Exam (SAE) in Reading K-12 qualify for the Reading coverage. Currently, eight hundred and fifty certified teachers, substitutes, and administrators hold either the Reading Endorsement or the Reading Coverage on their certificate.
In consideration of the requirements in the program, the following district position is assigned management responsibilities for this Reading Add-On Endorsement Program:
Name: Mike Alba
