Ryan Dufrain, Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources, provided the Board with his department's budget presentation. The information provided included:

  • Department Overview
  • Services Provided
  • Budget Overview
  • What's Next

Discussion ensued among the Board, including questions answered by staff. In addition, the Board provided feedback pertaining to concerns and/or support for the direction to include:

  • Retention 
  • Advertisement of job sharing and employee tuition reimbursement program
  • Convey the story of BPS and highlighting unique features of the Space Coast 
  • Data presentation of substitute fill rates  
  • Recruitment of out-of-state teachers 

 

5. Educational Plant Survey

Karen Black, Manager-Facilities Planning & Intergovernmental Coordination, provided the Board with her department's Educational Plant Survey presentation. The information provided included:

  • An inventory of existing facilities
  • Recommendations for existing and new facilities which will be State funded (based on facility assessments)
  • Projected COFTE (Capital Outlay Full-time Equivalent) student enrollment prepared by FDOE
  • Pre-approved CTE/Adult Education Program Facility needs for five years (DVE 768-approved April 17, 2023)

The Board expressed appreciation of Ms. Black's insight and attention to detail. 

6. Alternative Learning Center - Drug Diversion Program

Misty Bland, Director of Alternative Site, Programs and Discipline, presented the Alternative Learning Center - Drug Diversion Program to the Board which included:

  • 2022-2023 discipline data
  • Comparison of other counties drug diversion programs
  • Proposed program details - "Better Without It"
  • Student outreach ideas

 

Discussion ensued among the Board, including questions answered by staff and guests of the proposed program "Better Without It". In addition, the Board provided feedback pertaining to concerns and/or support for the program to include:

  • Prevention campaign
  • Discipline consistency
  • Solutions for repeated offenders

 

The Board expressed their appreciation of Ms. Bland and the guests of the program "Better Without It".  

7. Gardendale Update

Pamela Dampier, Assistant Superintendent of Student Services, presented the Gardendale update to the Board which included:

  • Purpose 
  • Assesment of needs:
    • Classroom spaces
    • Playground 
    • Technology upgrade
    • Transportation
    • Personnel
    • Positive behavioral interventions 
  • Next steps
    • Program model of support
    • Use of program support
    • District provides coaching/mentoring

 

Discussion ensued among the Board, including questions answered by staff. In addition, the Board provided feedback pertaining to concerns and/or support for the program to include:

  • Appropriate class size
  • Look into model schools 
  • Updated job descriptions 

 

The Board expressed their appreciation of Ms. Dampier and her attention to this important matter.
