The sidewalk on the north side of West Merritt Avenue adjacent to MILA Elementary School has been severely damaged by tree roots. The sidewalk is located on school property and extends east to North Courtenay Parkway. The sidewalk provides access to the school and the MILA Sports Complex which is operated by Brevard County Parks and Recreation on District property. District staff has been working with Brevard County staff to develop a plan to replace the damaged sidewalk, after removing the trees causing the damage and then turn the ownership over to Brevard County for future maintenance in perpetuity.

Brevard County Board of County Commissioners and the School Board of Brevard County previously (2021) entered into an Interlocal Agreement to allow Brevard County employees to execute minor civil construction projects for the School District. Brevard County Public Works has the capacity to execute the construction project at a lower cost than contracting the work. Brevard County staff prepared a construction cost estimate of $161,405.46. The project will be funded through capital.  

The Board previously approved the warranty deed to transfer the property to Brevard County so the sidewalk will be owned and maintained by Brevard County.

Board approval is required for purchase orders over $50,000. The task order is in accordance with the approved Interlocal Agreement with Brevard County for these types of projects. 

Approve the Task Order submitted by Brevard County Public Works to reconstruct the sidewalk along the north side of West Merritt Avenue in the amount of $161,405.46.
