The School Board met in regular session on Tuesday, July 13, 2021.  Notice of the meeting was advertised in the Thursday, July 1, 2021 edition of The Eagle.  An affidavit of publication is available in the Board Office.

  • Ms. Campbell was present telephonically.
  • Ms. McDougall was absent.
  • Due to an emergency, Mr. Susin left the meeting at 9:56 a.m. following the conclusion of business items requiring votes. He joined via conference call at that point.

An amendment was added to move public comments not regarding agenda items and the presentation following business items requiring action and/or possible actions such as those under information. EducateU was allowed to make a recognition to the Board in advance of the presentation.

Approve the listed administrative staff recommendations: Accept the retirement of Timothy F. Rooney from the position of Assistant Principal at Viera High School, effective June 30, 2021. Accept the position change of Michael C. Gladden from the position of Interim Assistant Principal (10 month), board approved on June 22, 2021, to the position of Assistant Principal (10 month) at Bayside High School, effective August 2, 2021. Accept the position change of Michael D. Newman from the position of Interim Assistant Principal (10 month), board approved on June 22, 2021, to the position of Assistant Principal (10 month) at Palm Bay Magnet High School, effective August 2, 2021. The reclassification/transfer of Mark A. Mallak from the position of Teacher at Stone Magnet Middle School to the position of Assistant Principal (10 month) at Merritt Island High School, on annual contact, effective August 2, 2021. Superintendent Dr. Mark Mullins provided his Superintendent's Report on 2021 FSA 3rd Grade Data Update and Other Data to be Monitored. 

 

  • Ms. Jenkins feels like you cannot look at this data and not have some sort of emotional response to it.  She appreciated that it acknowledged the things that we are not doing as well as we can and  commented that we can continue to move towards forward progress for all of our students. She indicated that we should be reaching out to various organizations to help progress move forward. 
  • Ms. Campbell thanked Dr. Mullins for bringing this to a public meeting. She stated that It is not easy information to share  She is excited to hear that we are going to put our foot on the accelerator. We are going to open up more doors and pushing kids, giving them the support they need to be successful. 
  • Mr. Susin stated that we need to pull everyone together. 
  • Ms. Belford said that she is so appreciative of Dr. Mullins and his team for digging deep and looking at our challenges.

Board consensus was to have Katye Campbell serve as the FSBA Board of Director for Brevard County with Jennifer Jenkins serving as the alternate.  General Counsel Gibb indicated he needed to have conversation with FSBA before a decision was made for the Advocacy Committee.

INSTITUTION:  ARTICLE IX - SECTION 1.  Public education. - The education of children is a fundamental value of the people of the State of Florida. It is, therefore, a paramount duty of the state to make adequate provision for the education of all children residing within its borders. ADDRESSING THE BOARD:
Individuals or groups may address comments to the School Board at any regular meeting by following established procedures.  The maximum allotted time for a presentation is three (3) minutes.  A speaker's time may not be allocated to others.  Individuals must complete a form located on a table near the east wall of the boardroom.  Thirty minutes will be set aside at the beginning of the meeting for public discussion on non-agenda items.  Up to thirty minutes of public discussion will be allowed for each agenda action item.

NOTE:  If a person decides to appeal any decision made by the Board with regard to any matter considered at this meeting, he/she will need a record of the proceedings and, for such purposes, may need to ensure that a verbatim record of the proceedings is made and that the record includes the testimony and evidence upon which the appeal is to be based.
