Discussion

This recommendation from the Secondary 7-12 Mathematics District Review Team is the result of an extensive review of the available programs and input from 7-12 teachers, administrators, instructional coaches, parents, and community members.

After an extensive review of the available materials, the District Review Team recommends that the Board approve this expenditure to ensure all classrooms have high quality, standards-aligned curriculum to support strong Mathematics instruction.

New instructional materials for grades 7-12 Mathematics were reviewed and considered for adoption during our process. These instructional materials are in consideration for adoption to align to the Florida B.E.S.T. (Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking) standards which will be implemented in the 2022-23 school year. The courses for which materials were reviewed are grades 7-12 Mathematics. The review, adoption, and subsequent purchase of new materials is pursuant to Brevard Public Schools Policy 2520 (Link to policy).

In order to ensure a transparent process, 7-12 instructional materials were made available for public viewing during all review dates here at ESF.

The District Review Teams were formed in August/September of 2021, comprised of teachers, administrators, and community members. These District Review Teams reviewed the submitted Mathematics digital and print materials from September 2021 – November 2021. The reviewers utilized a rubric which focused on the alignment to the B.E.S.T. standards, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), technology supports, teacher support, and supplemental instructional materials including family and community engagement. After a thorough examination process, the District Review Team narrowed the selection to one finalist. The selected instructional materials will be accessible via the BPS website from (12/15/2021 – 01/17/2022). (Click Here) for the link.

The Public Hearing is scheduled for January 18, 2022, School Board meeting to hear any comments prior to the consideration for adoption.

The School Board will consider the approval of the recommended instructional materials at the January 18, 2022, School Board Meeting.

If approved, as per 1006.28 F.S.and BPS Board Policy 2520, all instructional materials will also be digitally available for the 30-day public review process. Information regarding how to access these instructional materials will be provided to parents and county residents through a banner on the BPS homepage, BPS social media, and an email to every parent through Blackboard Connect. Schools will be provided implementation components for teachers of the courses listed on the attachment.

This may result in an additional review of instructional materials as per F. S. 1006.31(2) and 1006.40(3)(d). Parents of a public school student or residents of the county will have an opportunity to contest the approved selections during the 30-day public review period on a form provided by the School Board. The petition form can be found on the BPS website. Within 30 days after the 30-day period has expired, the school board must, for all petitions timely received, conduct at least one open public hearing before an unbiased and qualified hearing officer. The hearing officer may not be an employee or agent of the school district. The hearing is not subject to the provisions of chapter 120; however, the hearing must provide sufficient procedural protections to allow each petitioner an adequate and fair opportunity to be heard and present evidence to the hearing officer.  The school board’s decision after convening a hearing is final and not subject to further petition or review.
