Chairman Susin provided an explanation as to why he pulled the group of participants together to discuss Brevard Public Schools Discipline Policies and Procedures.  Each had an opportunity to speak of their experiences, followed by individual Board comments.

Mr. Susin proceeded to invite speakers to the podium.  43 speakers signed up to address the Board.

5. Brevard Public Schools Discipline Policies and Procedures

Chairman Susin called for a recess at 1:14 p.m.  The meeting resumed at 1:33 p.m.

Discussion ensued among the Board, staff and participants pertaining to the work being done at the district and areas for improvement.  Suggestions included:

  • Re-engage the discipline committee, starting immediately using existing outline, but expand it to include parent, community, and student input.
  • Create a culture where it is okay to speak up.
  • Consider additional days of professional development.
  • Bias / teacher classroom management trainings.
  • Decrease bus drivers' removal from routes while investigations are underway.
  • Take a problem-solving approach, not rushing, but look at the root cause.
  • Improve bus referral process, to include updating the drivers on outcome.
  • Cell phone/earbud usage in classrooms.
  • Assign a consequence, followed by having students complete a module to reflect on their behavior.
  • Encourage the use of reverse suspension.
  • Have PLT meetings throughout the community.
  • Increase mentoring program participation.
  • Build community partnerships to help with mental health.
  • Enforce ELO contracts.
  • Enforce our current policies and send communication to schools.
  • Enforce zero tolerance of physical aggression towards teachers, staff, or students.

Chairman Susin suggested forming a tight knit committee to focus on immediate and long-term solutions.  He then providing direction to staff for moving forward.
