Mr. Dufrain presented the two proposed calendar for SY 2024-2025 and SY2025-2026.  Mr. Dufrain went over the calendar committee and survey results for the 2024-2025.  The Board was given the opportunity to ask questions and give their recommendations.


  • Ms. Campbell recommended:
    • pursue the calendar that has the whole week off of Thanksgiving for both years.
    • 2025-2026 change the date off in April 24, 2026, move it to April 3, 2026, to have Good Friday off.  


  • Ms. Campbell researched data on Early Release days from another County's surrounding Brevard:
    • Pasco - 4 times a year 2 hr. early release just for Professional Development
    • Pinella - stopped early release days
    • Lee - 4 times a year for PD
    • Osceola - early release on Wednesday 1 hr.
    • Seminole - early release on Wednesday 1 hr.
    • Volusia - early release every week 1 hr.
    • Orange - early release every Wednesday 1 hr.
    • Indian River was not accessible.


Ms. Campbell believes that Brevard fell in ranking since we started the early release days.  Ms. Campbell recommended that we look at every option to give our students all of their instructional time and have the week of Thanksgiving and end before Memorial Day.


  • Mr. Susin recommended:
    • agreed with Ms. Campbells recommendations. 
    • discussion on the early release days.


  • Mr. Trent recommended:
    • agreed discussion on early release days.
    • would like to have both the week off and finish by Memorial Day.
    • look at some eLearning days.


  • Ms. Wright recommended:
    • discussion on a common bell schedule.  requested a copy of each school's bell schedule.
    • Thanksgiving week off.  


  • Dr. Rendell discussed the instructional minutes vs. days in the school year in reference to the bell schedule discussion.


Ms. Jenkins arrived at 2:17 pm.

  • Ms. Jenkins has no preference on the calendars; she would prefer to keep Thanksgiving week off for parents and students.

Dr. Wendy Smith, Director of Headstart and Terri Barlow, Assistant Director:  presented to the Board a presentation on the Headstart updates.

Student Achievement Update: Ms. Harris presented to the Board on the School Grades that were released on 12/11/2023.  The Board was given an opportunity to ask questions and make comments at the end of the presentation.


Ms. Jenkins is in the Boardroom just having technical difficulties and is having her computer looked at off camera.



Mr. Susin left the Boardroom at 3:50 pm and returned at 3:52 pm.



Instructional Materials - Adoption Social Studies Presentation


Ms. Tara Harris introduced the District Team involved in this process.

Mr. Susin: asked questions about the link, when he put his email address in it told him he could not access it because he was not a teacher.

Mr. Rehmer introduced Ms. Kathy McNutt who will review the process for naming the new Middle school.

  • Top 3 names
    • Viera Middle School
    • Artemis Middle School
    • Infinitus Middle School

The Board was given an opportunity to ask questions and make recommendations.

8. Discussion: Year-Round School

Ms. Wright had a discussion with her fellow Board members on Year-Round School.  She invited her fellow Board members to pole their principals in their Districts.

  • How do we move forward?


Ms. Jenkins stated her hesitations about businesses, students, families and BPS staff that will be affected.


Ms. Campbell, I am opposed to year round schools for the whole district.  Likes the idea of creating that options for our families.  Ms. Campbell reference looking at the plan that Royal Palm Charter is using.


Mr. Susin spoke on the positives that year-round school could have on the students in Brevard.  


Mr. Trent agreed with year-round school could have a positive effect on students, families and the community's.


Dr. Rendell spoke on looking at the schools that are already doing year-round-school.  This is something that will not happen next year, but we can start doing the leg work.  



Mr. Susin left the Boardroom at 2:47 pm and returned at 2:49 pm.

Mr. Trent left the Boardroom at 3:03 pm and returned at 3:05 pm.

9. Discussion: Offsite and Work Session dates and Times

Offsite discussion by the Board.

  • January 9, 2024, all in agreement



Discussion on moving the work sessions to the Thursday the week before the Board meeting. 

  • Time to start would be 9 am.  


Ms. Jenkins recommended:

  • off Tuesday
  • bring to staff for their input


Ms. Campbell was in favor of the off Tuesday.


Dr. Rendell recommended that he put together a couple tentative calendars to review at the January 9 offsite Work Session.  

10. Discussion: Changes to the Board Meeting

Ms. Wright had a discussion with the other Board members on these topics:

  • Public Speaking.  
  • Roll call voting change
  • changes to the script
  • rules posted at the podium
