A community meeting was held on August 29, 2023.  All zoned students were sent postcards inviting them to this meeting to meet Ms. McNutt, Principal, and learn more about the school.  (Attachment: New Middle School Presentation).  At the meeting Ms. McNutt shared a link asking for input on the following recommendations for school name and mascot with explanations for the suggestions and recommendations for the new middle school.  This link was also placed on the school website and shared with feeder principals to provide more opportunity for community input.  Ms. McNutt received 297 responses. (Attachment: New Middle School Identity).  Those responses were narrowed down to 17 categorized names and presented to the naming committee. (Attachment: Naming Committee Meeting).  The common names were broken down into three categories:  location, space, and people.  Per Board Policy 7250, the “Naming” committee was convened.  The Naming Committee consisted of 13 parents and 13 zoned students. (Attachment: Naming Committee MTG 10-10-23).  The Naming Committee met on October 10, 2023, where Ms. McNutt explained the role of the Naming Committee and reviewed the district policy.  The Naming Committee then reviewed the 17 categorized names and narrowed that list to the top six names.  The Naming Committee provided the top six names to all zoned students.  The top choice was Viera Middle School with 42.5% of the votes. (see chart below)

The six names sent to all zoned 6th grade students for consideration:

  1. Viera Middle School
  2. Artemis Middle School
  3. Infinitus Middle School
  4. Moore Middle School
  5. Buzz Aldrin Middle School
  6. Mae Jemison Middle School

The chart below shows the breakdown of how the zoned 6th grade students voted. Mae Jeminson was 3.1%, Buzz Aldrin 3.7%, and Moore 5.5%.

Please review the information provided and support the naming of the new Mid County Middle School to Viera Middle School.
