Discussion

The proposed change eliminates the requirement to pass a physical abilities test and adds language in the Performance Responsibilities and Knowledge, Skills and Abilities sections to require knowledge and use of best practices for safely moving objects, lifting and using tools and equipment to execute job functions. The physical abilities test is not a  requirement for most job descriptions that include heavy work nor are any retests required throughout the course of employment. The physical abilities test has been a barrier to fully staffing custodial positions. Consequently, the test will no longer be required to be hired as a custodian, but can be administered on an as-needed basis as a tool to evaluate fitness for duty.
