Public Comments - School Board Meeting April 28, 2020

In an effort to provide safe opportunities for public comment during the COVID-19 emergency in compliance with Executive Order 20-91, community members may fill out a registration form found on a link that will be posted at www.brevardschools.org on Friday, April 24, 2020. You will be called on Monday, April 27, starting at 5:30 PM to record your comment which will be played during the public comment portion of the meeting. The form must be submitted electronically no later than Monday April 27, 2020 8:00 AM Eastern.

April 28, 2020 School Board Meeting

The School Board of Brevard County met for its regular meeting on Tuesday, April 28, 2020.  Notice of the meeting was advertised in Florida Today on Tuesday, April 21, 2020.  The affidavit of advertising can be found in the Board office. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the meeting process was different as outlined in Chairman Belford's opening statement.

Chairman Misty Belford called the meeting to order at: 5:32 p.m.

 

Chairman Belford read the following statement:

In consideration of the current health and safety concerns during the COVID-19 emergency, guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as well as Executive Order 20-91 issued by Governor DeSantis, it is necessary to modify our Board meeting process to comply.

 

Board Members and staff may be participating by phone rather than being present in the Board Room.

 

The Educational Services Facility is closed to the public but the Board meeting audio and video are being live-streamed so the community can watch and listen to the meeting through usual channels.

 

Community members who wanted to make comments were asked to register in advance on the District web site. Those who registered were called Monday evening and their comments were recorded, limited to 3 minutes each. These comments will be replayed under the public comment section of the agenda.

Mr. Susin asked if the Board would consider giving a stipend or a bonus to PreK teachers who were not eligible to receive Best and Brightest due to legislation. He asked if the Board would be ameneable to providing Dr. Mullins direction to see how much that would cost and who would be qualified.

 

Board consensus was to explore the cost and options surrounding the request.

 

Mr. Susin made a request to have a listing of all expenditures $500 or greater broken down cost center with description for 2017-18, 2018-19 and 2019-20.

 

Mr. Susin also asked for a breakdown of COVID-19 savings.
