Discussion

The FY 23 capital plan includes funding for middle school science lab renewal to supplement funding that was allocated in the 2020 sales surtax plan. Facilities and Leading & Learning staff collaborated to develop a modernized District standard for middle school science labs and utilized this standard for the renewal project. The Florida Department of Education also has safety standards for middle school science labs which were also incorporated into the projects. The scope of the projects include extensive plumbing, casework, flooring, electrical and minor HVAC.

Wharton Smith, Inc. has submitted a Guaranteed Maximum Price (GMP) proposal in an amount not to exceed $653,052 for the science lab renewal (4 labs) at West Shore Jr./Sr. High School under their continuing contract for design build services based on designs prepared by Architects RZK under the preconstruction services contract with Wharton Smith, Inc.  Additional administration and permitting costs are estimated at $5,000. This project is funded through 2020 sales surtax and capital. The Independent Citizens Oversight Committee (ICOC) recommended approval of up to $300,000 towards the West Shore Jr./Sr. High School science lab renewal project at its December 7, 2022 meeting.

Board approval is required for purchase orders over $50,000.
